Summer Bucket List Week 11: Goodbye Summer

Tomorrow we start back to school.

This week was full of activities, most of which were focused on prepping for school to start.  All of us got haircuts and we finished up back to school shopping. We managed to squeeze in several play dates at the pool, here at our house, and at friends' homes, as well.  We stayed up way too late every single night watching the Olympics and daydreaming about winning gold: Molly in synchronized swimming, Ryan in diving, and Andrew in fencing.

Summer Bucket List Item #55:  Tongue Crib

On Monday. Andrew got his first piece of metal in his mouth, just in time to start middle school.  Luckily for him, it can't be seen, but it does cause his speech to be a little different and he was in a lot of pain the first few days and would only drink protein shakes.  Not a fun summer bucket list item, but an important one. Above is a picture from the internet, since Andrew didn't want me to take actual pictures of  his mouth.  (not that I blame him).

Summer Bucket List Item #56: Enrolled in Fencing Class

Andrew tried fencing last summer and decided that he really loves it and has officially enrolled in fencing classes for the school year.  His coach is wonderful.  She is a Russian National Champion. So far, Andrew is the only student who does not speak Russian.  He is very excited to learn to fence and is also hoping to learn to speak Russian as well.  His first tournament is in a few weeks.  He has spent a lot of time this week online reviewing Olympic footage and researching colleges that have fencing teams.  He is very enthusiastic, and in true Andrew fashion, has thrown himself in 100%.

Summer Bucket List #57: Newsies

On Tuesday, I took Ryan on a surprise date to see Newsies.  The first time I showed the kids the Disney movie a couple of years ago, Ryan fell in love and watched it several times.  He made several comments at the time, saying that he didn't know that boys could be dancers, too.  It was the first time that I knew that Ryan really wanted to take dance classes.  It took him another year after that to decide he wanted to take classes, but he loves dancing, especially performing on stage.  I was able to get us seats in row E thanks to a student discount special they were running!  We were close enough to really see the dancers' feet. Ryan was mesmerized.  Throughout the show and the entire way home, he kept hugging me and thanking me for bringing him to see it.  He also requested that I find him an agent ASAP, so that he could be in the traveling production of Newsies.

Summer Bucket List #58: Birthday Dinner with Friends at Amelie's

A few of my dearest friends got together and planned to take me out for my birthday this week at my favorite restaurant.  With all of our summer travels, this was the first time we were all in here in town.  I am blessed to be surrounded by such beautiful, kind, and thoughtful neighbors and am more grateful than words can express for their sisterhood.

Summer Bucket List #59: Meet the Teachers Night

On Thursday night, we were able to meet Molly's teacher, Miss Clevenger.  We have heard wonderful things about her and are optimistic that Molly's trend of having effective, sweet, kind, and caring teachers will continue this year.

We already know Ryan's teacher, Mrs. Yasinski.  She was Andrew's favorite 4th grade teacher.  Ryan is thrilled to be in her class this year! We aren't allowed to choose our teachers at ILES, but I would have happily chosen either of these teachers for my kiddos!

Summer Bucket List #60: Andrew's Middle School Preview

The sixth graders were invited to go to school on Friday for a preview of the school.  They went on a tour, met their teachers, practiced opening their lockers, and finished off with a pizza party.  Andrew doesn't really know anyone on his team, but has lots of friends with him in his band class.

That night, they were invited back for a locker decorating and snow cone party.

Summer Bucket List #61: Back to School Breakfast

I hosted our 2nd Annual neighborhood Back to School Breakfast as part of the Social Committee this weekend.  The kids made a banner for the teachers at our school, collected school supplies to donate to the school, and ate lots of yummy breakfast food.  We also arranged a uniform exchange.  All extra uniforms will be donated to our school for children who may need an extra set of clothes during the day or who do not have uniforms.

Summer Bucket List #62: Father's Blessings

The last thing we do each summer, before we head back to school, is hold a special Family Home Evening.  We sing songs about Jesus, mom gives a prayer inviting the Holy Ghost to be with us, and dad lays his hands upon each child, one at a time, to give them a blessing of strength as they start the new year.  I love hearing my husband ask God for special, individualized gifts for each of our children and to hear his encouraging counsel to them.  I am grateful for a husband who prays for our children and helps them to learn that all good things come from our Heavenly Father who loves us.

Goodbye summer.  I enjoyed every single moment I spent with my family this summer and am sad for it to be over.  Only 180 more school days until they are all mine again!

Summer Bucket List Week 10

Sadly, this was our last full week of summer.  This week we will be having back to school nights and Andrew will start Middle School on Friday!  We crammed  a lot of relaxing into this week.  We had play dates every single day.  The kids watched a lot of tv and played a lot of video games.  (We have a no weekday media rule during the school year, so they were binging to prepare for the impending famine).

We did manage to peel them away from the television and their friends a couple of times for a few fun adventures.

Summer Bucket List #49: Kindness Confetti Kids at the Senior Center

We held our last Kindness Confetti Kids meeting of the summer this week.  The children helped decorate for lunch at the Senior Center, exercised with the seniors, served and ate lunch with the seniors, listened to each guest share a little bit about their lives, partnered with them to play a game of bingo, and gave lots of hugs.  It was a wonderful experience for our children to get to talk with the wisest members of our community.

I have really enjoyed participating in service projects with my mom friends and our kids this summer.

Summer Bucket List #50: Molly and Daddy's Carowinds Date

Chad and Molly were able to go to Carowinds this week.  It rained at the beginning, but luckily the skies cleared and they were able to ride everything they wanted together.  The children have each really enjoyed their special one on one time with their daddy.

Summer Bucket List #51: Visit Miss Anglin

Molly has missed her teacher this summer and was very excited to go to the school to bring her the memory book we made for her.

Summer Bucket List #52: Ice Cream at Jolly Rolls

A new ice cream place opened up near our house that serves rolled ice cream.  Never heard of it before now, but apparently it is a big thing.  They make your individual serving of ice cream in front of you on a cold metal slab using fresh ingredients, then roll it up with a spatula.  Here is there website in case you want to see what I am talking about.  It is hard to explain.  We pass it often and I kept saying we would try it out and we finally got to this week.  It is absolutely delicious and I am glad we discovered it!

Summer Bucket List #53: Tubing the Catawba

We wanted to do something special the last Saturday of the summer, so we headed to the Catawba River to go tubing.  This has been an item on our bucket list since the first summer we moved to the area.  The weather was perfect and we all agreed we would like to do it again....but with waterguns next time!

Sadly, my phone got wet soon after these pictures were taken and stopped working.  Chad was able to fix it after a lot of hard work and research on YouTube!  He is the best!

Summer Bucket List #54: Celebrate Grandpa Scribner's Birthday

After tubing on Saturday, we drove to Pinehurst to have dinner with Grandpa to celebrate his big day!  Grandma made a delicious dinner and served PIE...Ryan's favorite food.   We are so grateful to have family close by that we can spend time with on a regular basis.  With a broken phone, I could not take a picture.  We had a wonderful time, but since we don't have visual proof, you will just have to believe us!

Summer Bucket List Week 9: Food Drive and Lots of Little Things

We slept in our own beds every night this week!  Which in and of itself should probably be a bucket list item.  Most of the week were small events, including four dental appointments. But there were a couple of picture worthy moments.

Summer Bucket List #39: Kindness Confetti Kids Neighborhood Food Drive

The Kindness Confetti Kids collected food items door to door this week and delivered them to the Lancaster Christian Services Food Pantry.  The children collected 797 food items and $37.  We live in such a generous neighborhood.  Everyone was so kind to the children as they knocked on doors in 94 degree weather.  The lady who received the donations at the Food Pantry was very impressed with our children and went afterwards to buy them gift cards for ice cream.  The manager of Chick-fil-a was so impressed with what the kids had done, he donated gift cards for milkshakes for all of the kids instead of letting her purchase ice cream gift cards. Kindness is contagious!  I have loved participating in this fun group this summer and am sad we only have one more week.

Summer Bucket List #40: Pajama Day

The next day was declared pajama day.  The kids stayed in their pjs all day and got to do whatever they chose.  Which of course was pretty much nothing but play video games and watch netflix.  I tried to take a picture of that, but they all just looked like zombies, making the picture too scary to put online. :)  But they did play with toys a little bit, too.

Summer Bucket List #41: Finish Summer Library Reading

All three children finished their summer reading charts for school and the library a long time ago, but we haven't been around long enough to visit the library to pick up our prizes.  All three received certificates and books.  Molly and Ryan got medals and Andrew, the middle schooler, got candy.

Summer Bucket List #42: Finish Summer Slump School Assigned Work

Molly and Ryan also finished their Bingo charts for school this week.  They had been working on it off on on during the summer.  It was a lot of work!

Summer Bucket List Item #43: Build a Dream Catcher

Ryan made a dream catcher this week as part of a Cub Scout requirement.  Molly started one, too.  It isn't quite finished yet.

Summer Bucket List Item #44: Peach Cobbler in the Dutch Oven

Ryan did not get to make his dessert on our camping trip, since we got rained out that last night.  He made it instead for us this week at home.  It was delicious!  And since we ate it at home and not while camping, we got to enjoy it with ice cream.   I love how much my children enjoy cooking!

Summer Bucket List Item #45: Play with Friends

Most of the week was spent playing at the pool and at our house with friends.  With traveling so much, the children didn't get a lot of friend time the last couple of weeks.  Molly and her friends love to put on shows for the moms.

Summer Bucket List Item #46: Work on the Golden Bull Book Trailer

As part of Andrew's summer assignment, he and two friends are creating a book trailer for the book they were asked to read before school begins.  They have spent many hours planning this project and filmed it this front of a green screen. We are all looking forward to seeing the final result some time this week.

Summer Bucket List Item #47: Dad and Ryan go to Carowinds

Chad is taking each of the kids to Carowinds alone this summer.  This week was Ryan's turn.

Summer Bucket List Item #48: Back to School Shopping

We headed to the stores for back to school supplies this week and got all we needed for school to begin in....11 days.  We went to use our free cupcake coupons from school when we finished shopping to celebrate.  I am in complete denial.  I am not ready for summer to be over.
